Exploration in Wood Turning
- complex shapes using basic tools with Bob Henrickson.
Bob Henrickson is a very talented member of OVWG and will be demonstrating the following 3 projects. If there is enough interest we may have him teach a class at a later date on one or all of them.
The goal of this demonstrations is learning how to create complex designs using basic equipment with new techniques that will expanding your comfort zone. You’ll want to turn the lathe back on when you are done in order to start your next idea.
Bob will demonstrate how to create a canvas with an infinite number of paths to take using multi-axis turning, “lost wood” technique, and symmetric turning with a twist. If you find creativity a challenge, this demo will provide you with a take off point for new possibilities.
Multi-axis turning with an offset platter
With the use of less expensive materials, a 1 inch thick blank can be used to offset the center of a platter using multi-axis turning.
Stars using a “lost wood” technique
Ribbles with ridges - progress from a block to a cylinder to a 6-armed star with a single piece of wood. The same techniques can be used for candlesticks, bowls, and puzzles.
Streptohedron - turning with a twist using paper glue joints
A streptohedron is a "twisted polygon” with rotational symmetry. When split along an axis, rotated, and rejoined, it becomes a new shape with compound-curved faces that seem to flow smoothly.
The technique uses glue joints to enable the splitting of wood at specific points, while using symmetric turning to create a cross sectional profile. The technique opens a spectrum of projects using various shapes, while extending your skills in creating unusual and challenging pieces.
