What is Segmented Turning?

Segmented Turning is a creative woodturning technique where you glue together multiple pieces of wood to form a blank — often in intricate patterns or shapes — and then turn it on a lathe. Instead of working from a solid log, you build your project from carefully designed segments.

It’s a great way to use scrap wood, mix wood types, or create geometric patterns that simply aren’t possible in traditional turning.

How to Get Started (It’s Easier Than You Think)

1. Start small — a simple bowl or vase using basic ring segments
2. Use tools you already have to make segments — miter saw, table saw, or bandsaw
3. Sketch on paper, design on graph paper, or try software design tools or even Excel spreadsheets
4. Assemble your rings and glue into a stack
5. Mount, turn, and enjoy your creation!
