About this event
- Topic: Learn to turn a mini-hat. We will take a blank through design, thin wall turning using a light to judge thickness, sanding & beginning bending. Final bending and finishing will be done at home after class. Tools used will include 1/2" & 3/8" bowl gouges, scrapers, chucks, and sanding & finishing supplies.
- Skill Level: Advanced skills, you must have comfort and established abilities with gouges and scrapers. Tool control is essential as thin turning does not tolerate catches. It takes me 2 hours to do a mini-hat uninterrupted. If you can't keep up the 6 hour class will not be long enough. This is not a class for beginners.
- Project: Complete a mini-hat ready for shaping & drying. You will take completed hat home in clamp. Shaping and drying & finishing after turning is a several day process. Instructions will be supplied.
- Materials: 7" x 4" blank/s of very fresh wet maple (supplied). 50:50 mix shellac or Lacquer & sandpaper grits 80, 120, 220, 320 would be nice to have. Some specialty tools & supplies will be made available by the instructor. You will be expected to make your own lighted jam chuck and hat bender prior to class and bring them with you. There will not be enough time to do this in class.
- Pre-Prerequisites: This document should be printed and understood. Turning a Mini-Hat
- The lighted jam-chuck and bender should be made and brought with you to class. Also purchase the LED light from Harbor Freight. There will be a limited number of jam-chucks & lights available to borrow if you are unable to do your own prior to class. At a minimum you will need a ratchet clamp instead of a bender. You will need a 100 watt reflector lamp at home to finish the drying and bending process.
- Pre-requisite: Introduction to Woodturning and the OVWG LC or a prior T&L series of classes. Also read and be familiar with the AAW Lathe Safety Guidelines and the Glossary of Woodturning Terms, available on the OVWG website in the document library or by clicking the following links: AAW Lathe Safety Guidelines and Woodturning Glossary
