Turning a Natural Edge Bowl

Topic:  This class will be concerned with the turning of a natural edge bowl with green (wet) wood.  Banks will be prepared ahead of time and will be approximitly 8” in diameter with the bark on the outside.  Our goal will be to turn a piece that is about 1/4” thick when finished and will have bark on the upper edge.

Skill Level:  This is not a class for beginning turners!  Those registering of the class should have turned a number of regular bowls and they should be comfortable in doing so.  

Project:  You will be provided with a bowl blank that has been cut to size.  Instructions will include how to mount the piece so as to produce a symmetrical shape with concentric growth rings displayed in the bottom.  You will also be able to see distinction between heart wood and sap wood.  You will leave with a piece that still has the tenon on the bottom.  Once it has dried you will be able to place it back on the lathe for sanding and to remove the tenon.

Tools/materials:  You will only need basic tools to complete this project.  They include:
1.  Bowl gouge = 1/2” or 5/8”
2.  Detail (spindle) gouge = 1/4” or 3/8”
3.  Scraper = round nose (1.5” or so) or a negative rake of    similar size)
4.  Thin CA Glue = this is optional but may be nice to have if your bark begins to come loose

Pre-requisites =  Introduction to Woodturning and the OVWG;  and a series of the turn and learn classes or experience turning several bowls.  You should also be familiar with the AAW Lathe Safety Guidelines and Woodturning
