Topic: Surface Treatment - Texturing, Carving and Coloring: Take your turned forms to the next level with this exploration in surface treatment. Laurent will introduce his favorite ways to incorporate woodburning, carving, texturing and coloring. Bring a pre-turned piece to texture or turn a simple form at the beginning of the day to practice new techniques.
Skill Level: You need to be very comfortable rounding a blank, mounting it in the chuck, and making controlled cuts with bowl & spindle gouges.
Tools/Materials for participants to bring (if available): tools you are comfortable using (bowl gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool).
Wood Requirements: Hopefully students will bring pre-turned forms to texture (either from the previous two days of classes or from home), if not it might be helpful to have 1-2 blanks per student of tight grain (cherry, maple, basswood, poplar) 2.5” x 2.5” x 5”. NO OPEN GRAIN (ash, elm, oak, etc.)
Tool Requirements: Powerful woodburner (ex. MasterCarver), Rotary Carving Tools (i.e. Foredom)
Materials for participants to bring (if possible): Simple, pre-turned forms to explore texture (cylinder, egg, etc.) out of closed grain material (cherry, maple, basswood, poplar) NO OPEN GRAIN (ash, elm, oak, etc.) Woodburner, Rotary Carving Tool (i.e. Foredom), Paintbrushes, Acrylic paint (colors that you like)
