Topic: Multi-Axis Drop: Participants will be introduced to multi-axis turning to make an off-center drop. The drop will also be carved with the use of gouges and rasps. If time allows, participants can also start to explore texturing or turning forms to compliment the drop.
Tools/Materials for participants to bring (if available): tools you are comfortable using (bowl gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool).
If participants don't have time to make anything in advance we can do that first thing in the morning. Otherwise they can bring a couple shapes preturned and UNSANDED. Any simple shape would be suitable, Spheres, Tear drops, Eggs, all in end grain or a disc out of side grain. All in the size range of handheld, something that fits in the palm of your hand. I would recommend mostly tight grain (cherry, maple, poplar, basswood...) and one of them out of open grain (ash, elm, oak...) for different types of texturing. I also recommend leaving it solid, even if it still has a tenon for hollowing later, as they will be exercises with a variety of textures.
Skill Level: You need to be very comfortable rounding a blank, mounting it in the chuck, and making controlled cuts with bowl & spindle gouges.
