About this event

There seems to be some confusion. This will be a LIVE demo at the Learning Center. It will also be streamed on ZOOM.

Carved Vessel Demonstration Overview

In this demo we will discuss the evolution of my process for creating various styles of carved vessels, beginning with exclusively using simple shop made tools and ending with the various commercially available carving tools. We will begin by turning a bowl/vessel from green wood and looking at how grain orientation and other factors affect certain design considerations. There will also be some discussion of simple techniques for drying the piece before, during, or after carving.

Next, we will examine different methods for creating a pattern on our turned vessel. The carving/sculpting process will begin with simple techniques accessible to novice or non-carvers that utilize basic tools found (or made) in any woodturner’s shop. We will then explore additional methods and tools that are not required, but that can enhance the efficiency of the process.

Finally, the sanding and finishing process will be discussed. This will include a variety of creative ways to effectively sand the irregular surface of our carved piece.

If time permits there will be a demo of a more complicated winged bowl.
