Turning 2023
Volunteering Opportunities

It is fun and rewarding to help stage our biennial woodturning symposium - one of the longest running events in the woodturning world.

If you've attended and helped out in the past, you know two things:  It is lots of fun to meet the professional turners and other turners from around the region; and our event succeeds only through the efforts of many volunteers. As the old saying goes - many hands make light work.

The volunteering portal is now open on the OVWG website. You must sign in as a member to see this.

On the main menu, click on the tab labeled "Contribute". "Volunteering" is the first thing you'll see on the drop down menu. Click on that and the various options will appear.  On each of these there is a "See More" arrow. When you click that, it gives you more than just a headline of where you can help out.

Here's also a review of where you can help:

  • On Tuesday, 10/10, help get supplies and equipment packed up and ready to ship out to Higher Ground
  • Provide a ride from and to the airport for two of our featured demonstrators:  Helen Bailey and Matt Monaco.
  • On Thursday, 10/12, help get set up. Arrange chairs, set up TV's, stage tables, move the lathes in place and more.  Everyone gets a free lunch at Higher Ground as part of this.
  • Address issues and help with questions during the event, related to tools, equipment and other needs.
  • Be a camera operator or demonstration assistant. We will train you for either of these. In each role, you would work for a morning or an afternoon, with a front row seat to two demonstrations (3 on Friday afternoon). You can pick the session and featured demonstrator that you wish to support.
  • During the live auction, be a "flagger", pointing out bidders in the crowd so that the auctioneer knows who made each bid. Or, be a runner, carrying items to the stage for bidding, then each item behind the checkout counter, and finally retrieving the items to give the winning bidders.
  • On Sunday afternoon, 10/15, help pack up, and load our equipment and supplies onto the truck to ship everything back to the Learning Center
  • On Monday 10/16, help unpack everything and put it away.
Most of these roles do not require prior skills or experience. We will train camera operators and demo assistants. Providing support during the event does require some knowledge of tools and equipment. Other than those, all that is required is being present and willing to help.

Thank you in advance for taking a look at the opportunities and volunteering to help make Turning 2023 another great OVWG Symposium.
